EV charger cable length: how long is long enough?

Short answer: 25 ft is the de-facto standard — 185 of 377 certified chargers with a listed cord (49%) ship exactly that, and the NEC caps output cables at 25 ft anyway. Measure your worst-case parking position; buy shorter only if the run is genuinely short, because cable length is fixed at purchase and the mistake is always in the same direction.
What the market ships
Cord lengths across the certified market cluster tightly: the median is 25 ft, 27% of units ship under 20 ft (mostly 16–18 ft), and a small tail runs past 25 ft for commercial-style pedestals. The 25 ft ceiling isn't marketing convergence — NEC Article 625 limits the output cable of an EV charger to 25 ft unless a cable-management system is used, which is why residential units stop there.
How to measure what you need
Don't guess from the garage's size — walk the actual path:
- Find your charge port. Port position varies by model: rear-left (Tesla, Hyundai/Kia), front-left fender (Ford Mustang Mach-E), front-right (Nissan), driver-front quarter (Chevrolet). It dictates which way you'll park.
- Mark the mounting point — near the panel run is cheaper, but within reach of the port beats saving 3 ft of wire (the circuit, not the cable, is the flexible part — see circuit sizing).
- Measure to the port along the floor and up, car parked in its worst-case position (nose-in when you usually back in, the far bay in a two-car garage), adding ~2 ft of slack for drape.
- Add the second car. If another EV might share the unit, measure to its port too — a 25 ft cable usually reaches both bays of a double garage from a wall between them; an 18 ft cable often doesn't.
Why not just always take the longest?
- Weight and handling. A 25 ft, 48 A-rated cable weighs several kilograms and is stiff in the cold. If your run is a wall directly beside the port, an 16–18 ft cable is nicer every single day.
- Cable management. Extra length lives on the floor or a hook. Coiling a long, current-carrying cable tightly during charging concentrates heat — drape loosely or use a proper hanger.
- No extension cords. If the cable doesn't reach, the answer is relocating the charger or a longer-cord model, never a Level 2 extension — manufacturers prohibit it and receptacle-rated cords aren't designed for continuous 40 A draw.
