How the math works

This tool is not a load calculation. Whether your panel can actually take the circuit depends on everything else connected to it — HVAC, range, dryer, hot tub. The real method is the NEC load calculation for existing dwellings (NEC 220.83), which an electrician performs from your actual connected loads. Breaker and wire sizing, panel work, and the load calculation are jobs for a licensed electrician; use this page for budgeting and shopping only.
