Is 80 A (19.2 kW) home charging worth it?

Short answer: only 3 of the 29 EVs we track can accept 19.2 kW on AC, and for everything else an 80 A charger charges no faster than a 48 A one. If you drive a big-battery truck that has the 19.2 kW onboard option and you routinely arrive home deeply discharged, 80 A is genuinely useful; otherwise put the hardware and 100 A circuit money elsewhere.
The ceiling is in the car
An 80 A charger delivers 19.2 kW at 240 V — but the car only takes what its onboard AC charger converts. Plug a Tesla Model Y (11.5 kW limit) into an 80 A unit and it charges at 11.5 kW, exactly as on a 48 A charger. In our database the vehicles that can actually use 19.2 kW are:

Nameplate rates, no taper. On some models the 19.2 kW onboard charger is an option or trim-specific (e.g. the extended-range F-150 Lightning) — verify yours before buying anything.
Read the table's pattern: on the 205 kWh Silverado EV, 80 A turns an impossible 17.8-hour full charge into an overnight one — that's a real capability change. On the 84 kWh Lucid Air, it saves about three hours you were asleep for anyway.
What 80 A costs beyond the charger
- A 100 A dedicated circuit. The 125% rule demands it, hardwired only. That's 3 AWG copper — thick, expensive wire, especially on long runs (see circuit sizing).
- Often a service upgrade. A 100 A EV circuit on a 100–150 A house service rarely passes a load calculation; budget for a 200 A panel upgrade if you don't already have one.
- Hardware premium. The market is real — 80 certified 80 A chargers — but they cost meaningfully more than the 48 A mainstream.
Decision rule
- Buy 80 A if your vehicle accepts 19.2 kW, its pack is 120 kWh+, and your duty cycle (towing, long daily routes, work truck) actually drains it. For the Silverado EV and F-150 Lightning crowd, this is the honest recommendation.
- Wire for it, charge at 48 A if you're trenching conduit anyway and suspect a big-battery truck is in your future — oversized conductors are cheap insurance while the trench is open.
