J1772 vs NACS for home charging: which connector should you buy?

Short answer: for home AC charging the connector changes the plug shape, not the speed. Adapters convert either direction with zero speed penalty, so buy the connector that matches the car you'll own longest — and if you're unsure, J1772 hardware plus a J1772-to-NACS adapter covers every scenario today.

Two plugs, one job

J1772 has been the standard AC connector on non-Tesla EVs for over a decade. NACS (standardized as SAE J3400) is Tesla's connector, which the rest of the U.S. industry began adopting for 2025+ models. On DC fast charging the standards differ meaningfully — but at home, both carry the same single-phase 240 V AC and negotiate current the same way. A given car charges at an identical rate through either plug; its onboard charger sets the ceiling.

What the market looks like right now

The charger market has not caught up with the port transition. Of the 380 ENERGY STAR certified home chargers in our database, only 2 have a native NACS connector ( Tesla Mobile Connector , Tesla Wall Connector ) — the other 378 are J1772. Meanwhile 6 of the 29 EVs we track already have NACS ports, and most new models are switching. Expect the charger side to follow; for now, J1772 is where the selection, competition, and smart features are.

Adapters pass the same AC power through; there is no charging-speed loss in either direction. Buy adapters rated for your charger's full current (48 A if applicable) from the vehicle maker or a reputable brand — an AC adapter carries up to 11.5 kW for hours at a time.
